February 18, 2006 will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Hans
Asperger, who first identified the syndrome that bears his name in 1944.
2006 also marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of Dr. Lorna
Wing’s paper “Asperger’s syndrome: a clinical account,” which
first introduced the work of Hans Asperger to the English-speaking world
and ultimately resulted in worldwide recognition that the autism spectrum
includes highly successful and intelligent people as well as people with
more severe disabilities.
International Asperger’s Year was announced on October 15, 2005,
and will be the first worldwide occasion focusing on Asperger Syndrome.
Some of the objectives of IAY are to publicize Asperger role models and
achievements; improve and expand Asperger services; salute parents, families,
friends, volunteers, advocates and professionals working to improve the
lives of people with Asperger Syndrome; and enable Asperger communities
around the world to become better acquainted with one another.
The Committee for International Asperger’s
Year is
composed of organizations representing 15 countries on six continents,
